Adult Programs

Adult Learn to Sail

Using a very small instructor to student ratio, adults learn to helm and crew on two-person small boats over four Sundays or five Tuesday evenings. Basic boat handling, capsize recovery, sail trim and steering will all be covered. This course is perfect for parents envious of their children’s sailing camp, as well as anyone looking for a new activity. No prior experience is required. However, due to the physical nature of small boat sailing, students must be able to do one push-up.

Adult Learn to Sail Course Syllabus/ Outline:

1st Class - After introductions and course outline, sailors will learn how to rig and degrig their boats. Afterwards, we will introduce wind theory and basic sailing concepts. Sailors will learn how to recover a capsized boat and then will go sailing with an instructor on board.

2nd Class - Sailors will arrive and review what they learned in the first class. They will then go rig their boats. Instructors will be readily available to answer questions and offer friendly reminders, as necessary. Once the boats are ready, we will review tacking and then will go out on the water to practice. For the most part, instructors will be in chase boats and students will be sailing on their own. This class is strategically offered in the morning, as the BCSC winds are frequently much less in the morning than in the afternoon. Typically, sailors are able to practice steering and tacking in both light and heavier air this day.

3rd Class - Sailors will be introduced to the points of sail diagram, gybing, and upwind sailing. We will then go out sailing to practice skills from the second class and try the new skills discussed in the morning. Upwind sailing is historically the most difficult part of sailing, so instructors will use diverse teaching methods and will leave time at the end of class for lots of questions.

4th Class - On the last day, the sailors have already been taught the necessary sailing skills so we will spend lots of time on the water practicing. Sailors will be encouraged to stay after class for a BCSC corn roast. This will be a great opportunity to continue practicing their skills with a safety boat out on the water.

Adults Continuing to Sail

This option is only open to prior graduates of BCSC's Adult Learn to Sail course. Sailors may choose to retake the same ALTS class but at an intermediate level. Practice your sailing under the watchful eyes of US Sailing Certified instructors and make new friends as intermediate level sailors will sometimes be paired together and will sometimes sail with Beginners. $150 / Session ($75 for Friends of BCSC)
