John Markley - President

Board Member since: 2010, Term Expires: Dec. 2017

John Markley is a lifetime resident of Baltimore County. John was born, raised, and still lives on the shores of Bird River, just North of the Sailing Center. He is an Air Force veteran and a 1982 graduate of Towson University. He has been an employee of Baltimore County government for over 30 years, serving in many capacities including as the Deputy Director of the Department of Recreation and Parks. John became acquainted with BCSC when his nephew was a member of the travel Opti sailing team. Since then he has given back to BCSC in any way he can.

Dan Flanigan - Vice president

Board Member since: 2007, Term Expires: Dec. 2016

Dan and his family run the local Special Olympics Sailing program, practicing out of BCSC and DSC. Dan races Hobie 16's and Hobie 18's on the National circuit where he races with or against his two sons.

Steve Hurt - Treasurer

Board Member since: 2014, Term Expires: Dec. 2017

Steve is a local sailboat racer who loves assisting as crew for deliveries and regattas. Steve has two sons who enjoyed BCSC's programs and participated as Opti sailors on the travel team. After years of serving the Boy Scouts in various roles, he is now donating his energy to BCSC. Steve has been running BCSC's Boy Scout merit badge offering since 2011 and plans to continue and grow this great program while assisting BCSC where needed.

Bob Battista - Secretary

Board Member since: 2011, Term Expires: Dec. 2016

Bob is a long time resident of Baltimore County, moving to Maryland from Connecticut as a teenager with his parents. He has been involved in water related activities since early childhood. A graduate of Towson High School, he attended Towson University. Bob retired from a career in construction management with Whiting-Turner in 2007 and utilizes his extensive construction knowledge to maintain the facilities at the Sailing Center. Bob has been involved with Special Olympics since 1981, and their sailing program at BCSC encouraged him to join the Board in 2011.

George Good

Board Member since: 2008, Term Expires: Dec. 2016

George is a local business owner and well known within the Baltimore community. His enthusiasm and drive have served the BCSC board well since 2007, especially during a rough patch in 2010-2011 when BCSC was really feeling the effects of the recession. His family are all sailors, including his dad and son. George continues to use his resources and ambition to serve BCSC.

Edward Dryer

Board Member since: 2014, Term Expires: Dec. 2017

Ed owns and manages a local ship's chandlery business. His three children participate in BCSC programs and the whole family comes out to BCSC whenever possible. His ambition, resources into the sailing supply lines, and his desire to keep BCSC moving forward make him a great board member.

Mark Roesner

Board Member since: 2012, Term Expires: Dec. 2015

Mark is a lifetime resident of Baltimore County, having grown up in Bowleys Quarters. He learned to sail from his parents, spending most of his summers on the Chesapeake Bay. As a husband and father he continues to sail with his family aboard their 1951 Alden Ketch. Both of his kids have been involved with BCSC since 1997, as campers,racers and councelors. Mark and his family have volunteered countless hours to BCSC throughout the years and are avid small boat sailors, including racing on Thursday nights. Mark has been a USCG licensed Captain for 30 years and is currently working in Baltimore harbor as a Tugboat captain for Vane Brothers.

Jay Tyson

Board Member since: 2015, Term Expires: Dec. 2016

Jay splits his time close to his daughters - Delray Beach, Florida in the winter and Federal Hill in the summer. He is a 1968 Towson High graduate served in the Air Force before graduating from the University of Baltimore in 1979. He is now retired from his career as the Controller of a large box manufacturing company. His sailing career began at Maryland Marina and covered much of the northern Chesapeake from the mid 60's through the 90's. He initially competed and cruised on handicap boats and later moved to one-design racing. Much of his time now is spent as a Race Committee volunteer for events on the Chesapeake, in Florida, on the Great Lakes, and in England. Highlight events have been the ISAF Paralympic World Cup, CORK, and the Lightning Youth World Championship. He is BCSC's Race Committee Chair and is working to cordinate an race committe team between GSA and BCSC.

Betsy Greene

Board Member since: 2015, Term Expires: Dec. 2016

Betsy grew up sailing on the Severn River and spent her early 20's working in boat yards and doing boat deliveries. While in Cornwall, England she worked for a boat designer/ builder and eventually she built a 14' stitch and glue plywood catamaran herself. She returned to Baltimore to sail on the original Pride of Baltimore and that led to a furniture restoration apprenticeship. For the past 25 years, Betsy has owned a decorative painting business and has remained active in the Fells Point community. Betsy currently lives in Roland Park with her husband and opti-racing son, Angus.

Pam Calce

Board Member since: 2016, Term Expires: Dec. 2017

Pam and her husband took BCSC's Adult Learn to Sail class in 2015 to prepare them to sail their Catalina sailboat. They became hooked on BCSC's small sailboats though and are planning to send their two children to BCSC's summer camps in 2016. Pam has significant experience with fundraising and is excited to help BCSC raise funds for a dock.
